Google Business Profile Social Media Integration: Posting, Messaging & Local SEO
For local businesses, the Google Business Profile is often seen before the website or any social account. Connecting the two properly sends searchers to your active social channels, keeps your posts visible on Search and Maps, and gives you local performance data you can act on. This guide walks through each piece using only Google’s native tools.
Two naming notes. The product formerly called Google My Business is now Google Business Profile, and you manage it directly from Google Search or Maps. The original Business Profile chat feature was switched off in July 2024. Messaging now works through the Chat contact option covered below.
Linking your social profiles to the Business Profile
You can add one link per supported platform: Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, TikTok, X (formerly Twitter) and YouTube. Google notes that social links are available in select regions, so the field may not appear on every profile yet.
- Open the editor. Go to your Business Profile and select Edit profile → Contact.
- Find the field. Next to Social profiles, select Edit.
- Pick the platform from the Social profile drop-down and paste the full URL into Web address.
- Add the rest. Use Add social profile for each additional platform, then select Save.
| Platform | Accepted format (per Google) |
|---|---|
https://www.facebook.com/{username} | |
https://www.instagram.com/{username} | |
https://www.linkedin.com/company/{username} or /in/{username} | |
| TikTok | https://www.tiktok.com/{username} |
| X | https://www.twitter.com/{username} |
| YouTube | https://www.youtube.com/@{username}, /channel/… or /user/… |
https://www.pinterest.com/{username} |
Note that Google’s documented format for X still uses the twitter.com domain. If a link is rejected, Google says to check that it isn’t broken, duplicated, invalid or pointing to an unsupported platform.
Pro Tip
Only link accounts you actively maintain. A searcher who taps through to an Instagram profile last updated two years ago may assume the business has closed. Use the same handles everywhere so customers recognise your brand.
Updates, Offers and Events with Business Profile posts
Posts appear in the Updates or Overview tabs on mobile and in the From the owner section on desktop, on both Search and Maps. Create one from Business Profile → Posts → Add post, then choose the type.
| Type | Required | Button | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Update | Description (photo or video optional) | Optional action button with a link | News, new stock, behind-the-scenes |
| Offer | Title, dates and time | “View Offer” added automatically | Sales, coupon codes, seasonal deals |
| Event | Title, start and end dates | Optional action button | Workshops, launches, open days |
Current versions let you schedule a post and set it to repeat weekly, monthly or on a custom schedule. Multi-location businesses can publish the same post to several profiles at once. Posts older than six months are archived unless they have a date range.
Post status after publishing
Google reviews every post. Live means it’s public on Search and Maps; Pending means it’s still processing or the profile is unverified; Not approved means it broke a content policy, shown by the question mark beside the status.
Featured posts pulled from social channels
Google says posts about events, deals or specials may automatically show on the mobile profile as featured posts. These can come from your Facebook and Instagram channels as well as from Business Profile posts. For now, Google lists this as English-only, for single-location food and drink businesses in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
If you qualify, your public social posts effectively become part of your profile. Use clear dates, prices and event details in those captions, because that is the information a nearby searcher needs.
Image specs, character limits and CTA button rules
Google publishes these media requirements for Business Profile photos and videos:
| Asset | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Photo format and size | JPG or PNG, between 10 KB and 5 MB |
| Photo resolution | Recommended 720 × 720 px; minimum 250 × 250 px |
| Photo quality | In focus, well lit, no heavy filters or significant alterations |
| Video | Up to 30 seconds, up to 75 MB, 720p or higher |
Google doesn’t publish one fixed aspect ratio for post images, and crops differ between Search, Maps, mobile and desktop. As a rule of thumb, keep text and key subjects in the centre so a square or landscape crop won’t cut them off. The description field has a character counter in the editor. It’s widely reported as 1,500 characters, but Google’s help pages don’t state the limit, so trust the counter.
Rules that get posts rejected
Don’t put a phone number in the post text; Google may reject it. Attach a Call now button instead, which uses your verified profile number. Hotels can’t create Offer posts, regulated industries must not describe the regulated products themselves, and links must not lead to malware, phishing or adult content.
Choose the button that matches the landing page. If the button says book or order, the link should go straight to a page where that action can be completed, not your homepage.
Messaging customers from your profile
Since the original chat was retired, verified profiles in select regions can add a WhatsApp or text-message option instead. Go to Edit profile → Contact → Chat → Edit, choose WhatsApp or Text message, and add your WhatsApp click-to-chat URL or a number that can receive texts.
If you add both, Google shows only the text message option. Several profiles can share one WhatsApp link, which helps multi-location teams route chats to a central inbox.
Reading Business Profile Performance insights
Open Business Profile → Performance and set a date range. Data is only available for verified profiles, and it includes activity from both organic results and Google Ads.
| Metric | What it counts | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Calls | Taps on the call button | Requires a phone number on the profile |
| Website clicks | Clicks on the profile’s website link | Compare with GA4 sessions from that link |
| Directions | Unique direction requests, adjusted for multiple taps, cancellations and spam | Strongest signal of store visits |
| Messages | Distinct message conversations | Only if a Chat option is set |
| Views and Searches | Unique daily viewers; search terms that showed your profile | Searches update monthly and can take up to 5 days |
To see what website clicks do after they land, add UTM parameters to the profile’s website URL using our UTM naming guide. Multi-location brands can download performance for several profiles at once from Business Profile Manager under Actions → Insights → Download Report.
Putting it together: a local SEO posting workflow
Consider a hypothetical bakery that posts on Instagram daily. Rather than writing separate content for Google, it reuses its best weekly Instagram photo as a Business Profile Update, with a shorter caption and an Order online button pointing to its ordering page.
- Weekly: one Update built from the top-performing social post of the week.
- Seasonal: an Offer for holiday pre-orders with a date range, so it archives on schedule.
- Events: an Event post for each tasting or class, with start and end times filled in.
- Monthly: compare website clicks and direction requests with the posting calendar.
Google doesn’t say that posting frequency directly improves local rankings, so treat posts as a conversion and freshness tool rather than a ranking lever. Complete, accurate profile information, reviews and relevance remain the fundamentals.
Troubleshooting common problems
- No Social profiles or Chat field: both are limited to select regions, so the option may simply not be available for your profile yet.
- Photos not showing: media appears only on verified profiles and can take 24–48 hours after upload.
- Post stuck on Pending: confirm the profile is verified, then wait for processing to finish.
- Post Not approved: check for a phone number in the text, a disallowed link or regulated-product content.
Monthly Business Profile checklist
- Confirm every social link still opens the correct, active account.
- Publish at least one Update and refresh any expired Offers or Events.
- Add new photos that meet the 720 × 720 px recommendation.
- Review Calls, Website clicks and Directions against last month.
- Check search terms for new services customers expect from you.
