Linking YouTube Studio to Google Ads: Setting Up Video Remarketing & Demand Gen
Every organic view your channel earns can become an advertising audience. Linking YouTube Studio to Google Ads lets you build data segments from people who watched, subscribed or visited your channel, then show them follow-up ads. This guide covers both linking paths, what each permission unlocks, and how to deploy the segments in Demand Gen and in-stream campaigns.
Google Ads has renamed several things here. “Remarketing lists” are now data segments (the wider category is called “your data”), and the linking tools now live in Google Ads Data manager. Older tutorials using the previous names describe the same features.
Before you link: access requirements
Linking fails most often because someone lacks the right access. Confirm both sides before you start.
- Google Ads: the account needs administrative access. Check it under the Account access page in Google Ads.
- YouTube: channel Owners, Managers and Editors can link Google Ads accounts under YouTube’s channel permissions.
- Personalised ads: if personalised ads are turned off on the channel, data segments and earned action reports won’t be available.
- Made for kids: videos marked as made for kids aren’t eligible to build data segments.
Option 1: link from YouTube Studio (recommended)
Google’s help documentation calls this the recommended approach. You’ll need the 10-digit Google Ads customer ID, shown at the top of your Google Ads account.
- Open the settings. Go to YouTube Studio → Settings → Channel → Advanced settings.
- Start the link. Click Link account.
- Fill in the details. Enter a link name your team will recognise (for example “Brand – Google Ads main”), the customer ID, and the permissions to grant.
- Save. Click Done, then Save.
- Approve in Google Ads. The link goes live once the Google Ads account owner approves the request.
Option 2: link from Google Ads Data manager
Use this path when the advertiser starts the process, for example an agency requesting a client’s channel.
- Open Data manager. In Google Ads, go to Tools → Data manager → Connected products and click + Connect product.
- Choose YouTube. Select YouTube, then Link channel, and search for the channel or paste its URL.
- Owner or not. If you’re signed in as the channel owner, choose the link name and shared data, then click Link. Otherwise, enter the owner’s email address and send the request.
- Owner approves. The channel owner accepts via the email notification or the notification icon in YouTube Studio.
Pro Tip
Agencies should tell the channel owner before sending a request so it isn’t ignored as unexpected. If the Google Ads account sits under a manager account, the manager can see the channel’s metrics and, if sharing is enabled, share the data segments with its other accounts.
Permissions breakdown
The channel owner chooses which features the linked Google Ads account receives. Exact labels vary slightly between the YouTube Studio and Google Ads screens.
| Permission | What it unlocks | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| View counts | Organic (non-paid) view metrics for your videos inside Google Ads | Grant |
| Data segments (formerly Remarketing) | Audiences built from viewers’ past interactions with the channel | Grant: required for this guide |
| Engagement (where offered) | Earned actions after ad views, and channel engagements such as subscriptions as conversion actions | Grant if you measure earned actions |
Linking doesn’t give the advertiser any control over your videos. Linked accounts can’t add, delete or edit content, and the channel owner gains no control over the Google Ads account. One channel can link up to 300 Google Ads accounts.
Building audience segments from organic viewers
Once the link is active, go to Google Ads → Tools → Shared library → Audience manager. Click the plus button and select YouTube users.
- Name the segment with the action and duration, e.g. “YT – viewed any video – 90d”.
- Select the linked channel or linked creator video.
- Pick the action from the Action drop-down (options below).
- Set membership duration. The maximum is 540 days.
- Pre-fill the list. Under Pre-fill options, include matching users from the past 30 days instead of starting empty.
| Action | Intent level | Suggested use (rule of thumb) |
|---|---|---|
| Viewed any video from a channel | Broad | Largest pool; seed for lookalikes and awareness follow-ups |
| Viewed certain videos | Topic-specific | People who watched a product review or tutorial |
| Visited a channel page | Medium–high | Viewers actively exploring your brand |
| Subscribed to a channel | High | Launch announcements and offers to loyal viewers |
| Liked a video / added to a playlist | High | Smaller, engaged pools for tests |
The “viewed” actions include both organic and ad views. A segment can be used in campaigns once it has gained interactions from at least 100 viewers.
Views that don’t count
Data segments can’t be built from bumper or non-skippable in-stream ad views. Google also notes that Shorts ad views must reach 10 seconds to qualify for remarketing, so short ad creatives may fill segments slowly.
A simple segment strategy for small channels
Linking is quick; the value comes from how you combine segments. The plan below is a practitioner starting point, not an official Google recommendation, and durations should be adjusted to your sales cycle.
| Campaign goal | Include | Exclude | Duration (rule of thumb) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warm follow-up offer | Viewed certain videos (product or tutorial) | Existing customers or converters | 30–60 days |
| Channel growth | Viewed any video from a channel | Subscribed to a channel | 90–180 days |
| Launch announcement | Subscribed to a channel | None | Up to 540 days |
For example, a cooking channel that sells an online course could target people who watched its three course-related tutorials in the past 45 days. Excluding subscribers from a separate channel-growth campaign stops the two campaigns from competing for the same people.
Keep targeting broad within each campaign. Google notes that stacking several targeting methods applies all of them at once, which can sharply restrict impressions.
Deploying segments in Demand Gen and YouTube in-stream
Google upgraded Video action campaigns to Demand Gen, which now handles most conversion-focused YouTube buying. Demand Gen can serve on YouTube in-stream, in-feed and Shorts, plus Discover, Gmail and the Display Network.
Demand Gen
Add your YouTube user segments at ad group level. To keep a remarketing test on YouTube only, open Ad group settings → Channels → Let me choose and select YouTube in-stream, YouTube in-feed and/or YouTube Shorts. Demand Gen can also build Lookalike segments from people who watched videos on your channel, a natural next step once the remarketing segment proves itself.
YouTube in-stream
For a pure in-stream placement, keep only YouTube in-stream selected. Videos shorter than 10 seconds won’t serve there. Video campaigns built for awareness or views can also target these segments; When you add a segment through Audience manager, Google Ads asks you to choose Smart default, Targeting or Observation.
- Targeting restricts delivery to the segment. Use it for true remarketing.
- Observation keeps reach unchanged and reports how the segment performs, which is useful for bid insights.
What to measure after launch
Judge remarketing on more than cost per view. Check these signals in the first few weeks before you scale budget.
- Segment size trend in Audience manager. A segment that stops growing usually means organic views have slowed or the duration is too short.
- Earned actions, if you granted the Engagement permission: subscriptions and further views that followed an ad view.
- Conversions by segment, compared with a prospecting campaign using the same creative.
- Frequency. Small segments see the same ad repeatedly, so rotate creatives or widen the segment if performance fades.
Troubleshooting checklist
- Confirm administrative access on the Google Ads account.
- Check for a pending request awaiting the channel owner’s approval.
- For “channel already linked” or generic errors, retry in a private window or another browser.
- Allow up to 24 hours after linking before creating campaigns.
- Make sure the segment’s status is Open and it has at least 100 users.
- If a segment is shrinking, check whether the membership duration is too short.
Before buying audiences, audit what your organic viewers do with the 12-metric YouTube Studio checklist. Make sure the videos you promote are well packaged with native thumbnail testing. Tag landing-page URLs consistently using our UTM naming guide, and report results in a Looker Studio dashboard.
